Lightsaber: Lightsaber Colour Meanings

A lightsaber is a beautiful and deadly weapon in the Star Wars universe. It has a powerful retractable plasma beam powered by a Kyber crystal that emits different colours.

According to the canon of Star Wars, blue represents righteousness and bravery. It is why Jedi Guardians like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker used their blue-bladed sabres.

Blue

Blue lightsabers represent a Jedi Knight’s bravery and resolve to stand up against the darkness. Jedi Knights who wield blue sabres are also known for their dedication to finding peaceful solutions before resorting to violence. Red represents power, passion, blood, and dangerous qualities that embody the Sith. It is why the Sith Lords, such as Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, and Kylo Ren, use red lightsabers.

Purple lightsabers represent wisdom and spirituality. The Legends character Corran Horn (from the Star Wars franchise) used a purple blade. Mace Windu’s sabre belongs to this group, too, as it symbolizes his struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force. He was a moral, proactive Guardian but feared losing himself to the dark side.

Green

The green lightsaber represents growth, harmony, and nature. Jedi Knights who wield green blades are known to value a peaceful and harmonious galaxy. They are also considered some of the wisest Jedi in the Jedi Order.

It is why Jedi Survivors like Cal Kestis and Yaddle also own unique sabre colours. Orange blades are for those who are creative and ambitious. They can be found among the rebellious members of the Mandalorian Knights in Legends and the scavenger Rey from The Last Jedi. They have seen the dark side and risen above it. Yellow

The yellow lightsaber blade represents redemption and the potential for change. It also symbolizes wisdom and knowledge, as well as loyalty and dedication. The Jedi Temple Guard, a group of Jedi chosen anonymously who protect the Coruscant Temple, use yellow blades in their dual-bladed hilts. They represent the balance between the battle-ready Guardians and diplomatic-minded Consulars.

Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) uses a yellow lightsaber, and her choice might indicate that she has found this balance or is looking for it. She has spent time with Luke and Leia but is choosing to forge her path.

In the Legends universe, a Jedi’s lightsaber colour was linked to specific traits and paths in the past, but this is no longer true in canon. However, this does not mean a character cannot switch to another colour later in their story.

Purple

When Jedi Master Mace Windu wielded a purple lightsaber in Attack of the Clones, fans everywhere gasped. It isn’t just because it was the first time a new colour was introduced to canon but also because the amethyst blade symbolized his unconventional style.

Force users with purple lightsabers often demonstrate a balanced approach to the light and dark sides of the Force. They may be bold and reckless, but they aren’t easily frightened or tempted by the Dark Side.

It is probably why many Jedi who use a purple sabre have a background with the Sith. Like red, it symbolizes anger and passion, but it’s tempered with wisdom that comes from experience on the full moral spectrum of the universe. It’s the colour of redemption and actualization.

White

In Star Wars canon, white represents new beginnings and purity. Ahsoka Tano is the only Jedi to wield a white lightsaber in the series, and her weapon is significant to her journey.

Historically, blue represented Jedi Guardians who exemplified righteousness and bravery. It also symbolized trust and security, which is why so many heroes like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker used blue-bladed sabres. However, Ahsoka Tano uses a white-bladed lightsaber to signify her non-affiliation with the Jedi or Sith in the current canon. Purifying her kyber crystal frees her from their strict philosophies and priorities. She follows her moral compass and creates her destiny without the burden of others’ expectations. It is what makes her a true Jedi in her own right.
